Why "actual" resolution matters

The resolution your camera is capable of and the resolution it negotiates with the browser are not always the same. USB 2.0 ports can cap a 4K webcam at 1080p. Low light triggers some cameras to drop frame rate to keep exposure up. External monitors with built-in webcams sometimes default to 720p even when capable of more. The test shows what you're actually getting right now, not the spec sheet.

How to read the result

1080p @ 30fps: Standard for modern cameras. Good for calls and recordings.
720p @ 30fps: Acceptable but worth checking — many cameras can do 1080p.
480p or 360p: Fallback resolution. Likely a permission issue, USB bandwidth limit, or wrong device selected.
15fps: Often a low-light auto-exposure trade-off. Brighter room → 30fps.

If the device label is empty

Browsers hide device labels until you grant camera permission. If the picker shows generic "Camera 1, Camera 2," accept the prompt and refresh — labels populate after permission is granted.
